In The News Gov. Sundquist: "Don’t be fooled. Vote for Marsha Blackburn for the U.S. Senate."
Don't be fooled by Phil Bredesen and his misleading ads By Governor Don Sundquist Knoxville News Sentinel May 7, 2018
This is a critical election year.
But aren’t they all, you might ask? Why is this one so important?
I do not believe we have ever faced a more critical time in our democracy. The election in November will be the difference between continuing our nation’s robust economic recovery or returning to stagnation.
It is the difference between a strong foreign policy in an increasingly dangerous world versus a weak, lead from behind policy. It is the difference between the appointment of conservative, common sense judges or liberal activist supreme court judges.
We in Tennessee have an exceptionally important role in the November elections. We will be choosing a governor, a senator and members of the House of Representatives. Who we elect could very well change the course of our nation.
Conventional wisdom says that there will be a Democrat sweep in Congress this November. And, historically, this is true: the party in office loses seats in the midterm election. If this is the case, Tennessee’s choice for senator could change the leadership of the U.S. Senate.
I join President Trump, Vice President Pence, Senator Lamar Alexander and Senator Bob Corker in endorsing Marsha Blackburn for senator.
Marsha reflects Tennessee values and has a reputation as a fighter for Tennessee values in the U.S. House of Representatives. She has always been honest and clear about her positions and does not play the game of confusing the voters. She does not say one thing at home and vote the opposite when she is in D.C. She has a proven record of standing up for Tennessee values.
On the other hand, the likely Democrat nominee, Phil Bredesen, has muddled his stance in an effort to attract Republican and Independent voters. He is being intellectually dishonest.
Though his carefully crafted television ads suggest he will work with President Trump, that is highly unlikely. Are we to believe the man who was “courted personally” by Senator Chuck Schumer would vote against the Democrat agenda once in the Washington swamp?
It is well worth remembering that Phil Bredesen served as governor with a strong Republican majority in the Tennessee House and Senate. His liberal policies were kept in check by the strength of a GOP legislature. Make no mistake, if Bredesen is elected, he will support Chuck Schumer when he gets to Washington.
One need only look at the Democrats in the Capitol who have obstructed the most basic, common sense presidential appointments. When President Trump proposed historic tax cuts, not one Democrat in the Senate broke with their party to vote for it. They have stood in the way of virtually every piece of common-sense legislation proposed by the President.
The question is whether Tennesseans will send a senator to Washington who will stand up for the Constitution, will vote for pro-life judges and lower taxes. Or will we put a man in the Senate who will be the key vote to make Schumer the Senate Majority Leader?
As for Phil Bredesen’s misleading political ads, an old saying that comes to mind, you can’t “run with the rabbits and chase with the hounds.”
Don’t be fooled. Vote for Marsha Blackburn for the U.S. Senate.
Don Sundquist is a former GOP congressman and governor of Tennessee.
